My friends and I participated in our first designathon, ironically, a month after we graduated. This designathon, Adobe Creative Jam, was in collaboration with Netflix, and over the course of two days, we designed a website that helps people coordinate remote co-watching experiences.

After the designathon, my team and I wanted to do some more market research, so we sent out a survey to get a pulse check from people who have had remote co-watching experiences. These findings have helped guide us to re-evaluate some of the design decisions we made during the designathon and find ways to better target the various issues that exist.

Website Overview

Key Features

Create a Screening

Start a Screening with a movie/TV show or choose a theme and opt to choose later. Select the date, invite friends, set the privacy, and (optionally) drop a video call link.

In-Screening Activities

Post or comment in the Discussion section of the Screening and recommend movies if the film hasn’t been selected yet. Up or down vote movie recommendations so the host can make the final decision on what will be watched. wuhu also provides suggestions based on the theme/genre of the Screening and each attendees individual preferences.

Discover

View upcoming public Screenings that you can join in on and discover movies or TV shows based on your Favorites, Watchlists, and past Screenings.

Watchlists

Curate Watchlists of movies and TV shows based on genre, year of release, or any other category of your choosing.

Personal Profile

Update your favorite movie & TV shows, create Watchlists for friends and other users to draw inspiration from, and view past Screenings you’ve attended. Screenings can easily be created by clicking the “Create Screening” button.

Searching & Viewing Other Profiles

Find other users’ profiles and build your wuhu community by requesting to connect. Each user’s profile shows their favorites, Watchlists, and upcoming public Screenings they will be attending.

Research

With these statistics in mind, we couldn’t even imagine how frustrating it would be for a group of friends to make a selection! We felt that there was a clear need for a product that helps users agree on what to watch and organize the shared experience.

Survey Findings

After completing the designathon, we sent out a survey to get data on how people are currently co-watching remotely with their loved ones. We received 55 survey responses, in which 17 people had prior co-watching experience. Their responses have helped affirm, but also challenge some of the features and design decisions we made during the designathon.

Target Audience

Based on the survey we conducted with 17 people, 86.7% of respondents expressed their desire for human connection as a main reason they enjoy remote “watch parties.” Of the 90% of survey respondents who stated they would use wuhu to organize Screenings, 91% stated they would continue to use wuhu after the pandemic. There is a clear short-term need for a product like wuhu due to the social limitations of the coronavirus pandemic, but our survey demonstrates that there is also a long term need even after the pandemic.

Screening Creation Flow

After filling out the basic information for the Screening (title, date, time, privacy, friends, and optional video call link), there are two different routes the host can take. They can choose a movie or TV show now or opt to choose later. If the host decides to choose the content later, the invited friends can recommend movies or TV shows they think would be good to watch as a group. The friends can up or down vote content to express their opinions and also leave posts/comments in the Discussion section to make it easy for the group to come to a consensus.

Micro-interactions

I really value finding ways to make products bring delight and feel more human. Although these micro-interactions are subtle, I felt that animating the hover states would be more interesting and thoughtful, rather than defaulting to filling the buttons in with a solid color.

Reflection

This designathon gave a space for my friends and me to dive deeply into a project in a way that we hadn’t done together while we were in school. As non-designers, my friends brought up interesting perspectives that helped push our ideas further and consider issues that may not have been on the forefront of my mind. In hindsight, I wish we had taken more risks with the concept and parts of the design. We found ourselves weighing in buildability, marketing the product, and other “practical” details while designing, which are all important things that need to be considered when creating a real product, but I think if we had focused less on logisitcs, we could have created something more unique and innovative.
