Why don’t college students and working individuals cook more often?

Multiplate is an iOS app that aims to facilitate the cooking process by helping people plan, shop, and cook their own meals. Its database has hundreds of recipes that can be found individually, but it also connects recipes that utilize the same basic ingredients.

Recurring Problem

Every Sunday, I stroll into Trader Joe’s with no idea what I want to eat for the week. I grab some stuff I like and hope they will be able to make me lunch and dinner for the next few days. Unsurprisingly, around Tuesday night, I realize that the kale, bread, dried cranberries, and avocados I bought can only make so many meals.

After trying to seek advice from some friends about how they go about planning their meals for the week, we realized that we all had similar struggles! Many of the groceries we buy are never completely used and go to waste; we get sick of eating the same thing every day and end up going out to eat.

Research

Based on the casual interviews and survey I sent out, I realized that there were many common qualms that people had about cooking.

Target Audience

Multiplate focuses on helping college students that are on a budget and preoccupied with classes, homework, and extracurricular activities, along with busy, working individuals that are concerned with their health and want to make an effort to take control of what they put in their bodies.

Objectives

Multiplate gives people the space to explore different recipes, but also discover recipes that use similar ingredients, preventing groceries from being wasted and cutting down on money that’s spent on buying one-use ingredients and eating out.
